JACKSON, Miss. – Today, the U.S. Senate continued debating the advancement of both the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom To Vote Act. Both bills were passed by the U.S. House on Thursday, Jan. 13th, and together are two of the most prominent pieces of legislation introduced this Congress to promote the freedom to vote and help enact federal standards for voting.

In the end, senators failed to reach the supermajority threshold needed to overcome the use of the Senate filibuster and pass these bills. This is the second time that each bill was prevented from moving forward.

In response, Arekia Bennett, Executive Director of Mississippi Votes, issued the following statement:

“Abolish the filibuster.”
