Overview:

The Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator serves as a member of MS Votes’ Policy and Research Team.

The Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator will co-lead research as assigned, on voting related issues unique to Mississippi in comparison to other states to broaden the political ideologies and practices of MS Votes. The Policy and Research Team collects and analyzes information, such as data from public opinion surveys and election results as well as use qualitative and quantitative sources and methodologies to develop and test theories to better our field strategies and legislative agenda(s).

The sole function of the Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator’s responsibilities are to monitor current events as it pertains to public policy and/or youth organizing (global and domestic), policy decisions and trends and other issues with implications for the political and policy landscape. This person will track all legislation that impacts voters in the state of Mississippi during legislative sessions as well as co-coordinate legislative advocacy days at the Mississippi State Capitol pushing our legislative agenda to expand voting access.

The Mississippi Votes Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator works collaboratively with the Policy and Research Analyst to:

Responsibilities:

● Manage local policy teams of passionate student and community leaders

● Organize local happy hours and community events to create spaces for elected officials to meet young people

● Cultivate relationships with elected officials throughout the state and successfully advocate for progressive policies

● Assist in coordinating major advocacy projects including voter guides, candidate forums, Legislative Advocacy Days at the Capitol, and any additional advocacy focused panels and events

● Coordinate focus groups with young people across the state to learn about their most pressing issues

● Conduct public opinion surveys about voter modernization tools like online voter registration, vote by mail, and other 21st century tools that might expand access to the ballot

● Maintain rapport with Democracy in Action and One GIRL, One Vote fellows --both past and present

● Assist with developing MS Votes voting rights campaigns

● Lead Public Policy Political Education Academies

Skills and Experience:

● Must have high level writing skills

● Must have high level communication skills

● Must have ethical behavior to be consistent with the standards and the values of MS Votes

● Must be able to interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization

● Must have strong working skills and be an advanced user of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentation software (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, etc).

Field Organizer

Overview:

There will be five (5) field organizers on the Field Team. Each Field Organizer will co-lead the field plans with a strategic understanding of Mississippi Votes’ theory of change in relation to developing a voter friendly Mississippi. The Field Organizers will be responsible for frequently assisting the Policy & Research Team to develop the organization’s field plan and communal approach to the vision towards developing legislation that seeks to expand Mississippi’s electorate. The Field Organizers co-lead all GOTV efforts including, but not limited to MS Votes’ annual #Up2Us campaign. The Field Organizers are responsible for managing a database of national and local supporters; forming or joining coalitions as necessary with unanimous approval from the Leadership Team.

The Field Organizers are responsible for organizing one of the 4 congressional districts in Mississippi. In some instances, the Field Organizer may be responsible for assisting to organize and work in and around college campuses in the areas they are responsible for.

Responsibilities:

Establish a strong professional culture within the voter services team focused on accountability, specific goals, innovation, and sense of purpose
Work with fundraising team to meet with donors about field operations and assist with securing gifts
Manage the field program budget and logistics in coordination
Ability to design, communicate, and implement a comprehensive, data-driven field plan
Build and manage a large, multi-layered statewide intergenerational field team consisting of paid staff, student fellows and interns, and volunteers
Set, meet, and exceed benchmarks for voter registration, volunteer recruitment, voter contact, grassroots engagement, and get out the vote (GOTV)
Co-create and implement quality control system for voter registration maintenance within every level of the organization’s programs
Design and standardize best practices for data management using the organization’s data software
Manage MS Votes’ VAN (Voter Access Network) and Every Action software; work towards building an independent data platform
Monitor initiatives and efforts to measure impact (i.e. voter registration/turnout, #Up2Us Campaign residuals)
Understand and be aware of Elections Laws and Regulations in the state of Mississippi
Identify opportunities to bring MS Votes to community
Co-Lead Voter Empowerment Project
Co-Lead special field operations as requested by Executive Director/Leadership Team

Skills & Experience:

Self-starter than can lead large groups of people, create electoral plans, and work with young people to develop them into civic leaders
Candidates with 2+ cycles of organizing experience leading statewide or regional field programs and mobilizing volunteers
Extensive experience managing and training high performing staffers
Well organized individuals with effective time management skills that can work independently with minimal supervision
Experience in program coordination, event planning, and youth organizing required
Strong computer skills including G Suite and database management
Experience with VAN

The Public Relations Coordinator will be in charge of producing high-quality written content that engages Mississippians statewide and builds brand recognition and trust. The Public Relations Coordinator’s main duties will include creating informative content, press releases, articles, and media opportunities to share our organization’s mission, vision, values, and work.

The Public Relations Coordinator works collaboratively with the Communications Team to curate meaningful and relatable messaging for the organization’s internal and external use.

Responsibilities:

Organizational Communications:

Execute MS Votes’ Communications strategy in support of our mission, vision, values, and culture
Ensure consistency of message, look, and feel of all communications
Listen to, develop, and tell authentic and compelling stories of the [young] people who call Mississippi home
Create communications assets and tools (press releases, social media toolkits, etc).
Write communications plans for policy campaigns, internal projects, and content launches
Participate in coalition and colleague messaging research, develop MS Votes messages, and share learning with staff

Press:

Develop and execute an earned media strategy
Build and maintain relationships with local, statewide, and national reporters with special emphasis on POC-owned outlets
Pitch MS Votes’ stories to TV, radio, print, and digital outlets
Develop written materials including press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, speeches, one-pagers, and reports
Ideate and develop strategic communications tools including talking points, messaging maps, background information to prepare staff for media interviews
Monitor and evaluate MS Votes’ press coverage and messaging quality
Provide support to staff & members in crafting their story, op-eds, statements, and social media content

Qualifications & Experience

The MCS will be a member of MS Votes’ emerging Communications Team which reports to the Communications Director. Responsibilities:

Office Management:

The Youth Organizers co-facilitate all GOTV efforts including, but not limited to, MS Votes’ annual #Up2Us campaign. The Youth Organizer will also be responsible for developing and implementing a program to increase civic engagement among high school and college students in Mississippi. They will also develop and lead workshops and other educational programming to help students develop the skills and knowledge they need to be active and engaged citizens.

The Youth Organizers are responsible for organizing in one of the 5 regional offices identified by Mississippi Votes: 1.) Tupelo (Northeast), MS, 2.) Hattiesburg (South), MS, 3.) Cleveland (Delta), MS, 4.) Gulfport (Coast), MS, and the headquarter office, 5.) Jackson (Central), MS. Each of these offices are located strategically in Mississippi’s Congressional Districts. In some instances, the Youth Organizer will be responsible for assisting to organize and work in and around college campuses in the areas they are responsible for.

The Youth Organizers will lead the day-to-day operations and programming for the Democracy in Action Fellowship Program, as well as the Youth Advisory Council, and are also responsible for any programming or events that involve high school and college-aged students in their respective regions. (note: college-aged doesn't mean that those persons participating have to be in a traditional educational setting; they just happen to fall in the 18-39 age range thus making them eligible to participate in programming).

Manage the day-to-day operations of MS Votes’ college and university programming that include the Democracy in Action Fellowship and potentially student groups that form with our ideology and practice. This also includes creating/developing advocacy toolkits, issue briefs, reports, and policy statements affecting college-aged youth; lead the revision of existing MS Votes advocacy toolkits to share strategies and tips for youth and collegiate organizing.
Set frequent meetings that discuss the status and flow of programming that will intersect as well as set quarterly goals and objectives based on the overarching goals and vision of the organization as laid out by the Executive Director.
Where appropriate, represent MS Votes at conferences, in the media, and other approved events.
Lead Summer Youth Programming.
Help coordinate Voter Empowerment Project.

Qualifications:

Ability to lead large groups of people, create electoral plans, and inspire young people to participate in civic engagement.
Experience in leading statewide or regional field programs and mobilizing volunteers.

Over the last 4 years, Mississippi Votes (MS Votes) has become increasingly curious about what it means to organize young people of different faith communities around electoral and political issues. We hope to craft an agenda informed by faith leaders and like-minded stakeholders to explore how implementing this type of engagement could do for our electoral organizing.

The Interfaith Organizing Manager at MS Votes will play a crucial role in fostering collaboration and engagement among diverse faith communities across Mississippi. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to mobilize faith-based organizations and leaders to promote voter education, registration, and turnout. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and a passion for building bridges between different communities.

Responsibilities:

Community Outreach:

Cultivate relationships with diverse faith communities, religious leaders, and organizations across the state.
Organize and attend meetings, conferences, and events to connect with key stakeholders in the interfaith community.
Build and maintain base of faith leaders and convene them quarterly
Develop new national faith partnerships across the country to assist with the goals of the Voter Empowerment Project (VEP)
Work closely with the Voter Services Team to integrate interfaith organizing into broader voter mobilization campaigns.
Coordinate and lead interfaith initiatives during election cycles and other key civic engagement periods.
Collaborate with other community organizations, advocacy groups, and stakeholders to maximize impact and reach a broader audience.
Strategic Planning:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive interfaith organizing strategy to increase voter engagement and participation.
- Collaborate with other departments to align interfaith initiatives with overall organizational goals.
Training and Capacity Building:
- Conduct training sessions and workshops for faith leaders and community members on voter education, registration, and mobilization.
- Provide resources and support to empower faith-based organizations in their outreach efforts.
Data Management:
- Utilize data and analytics to assess the impact of interfaith organizing efforts and make informed adjustments to strategies.
Reporting:
- Provide regular reports on the progress of interfaith organizing initiatives to senior management and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Familiarity with the principles and practices of congregation-based organizing, including grassroots leadership development and coalition-building
Well organized individual with effective time management skills that can work independently with minimal supervision
Strong writing, public speaking, and interpersonal communication skills
Personal qualities that include integrity, mission commitment, ability to motivate and inspire
Ministered to a congregation and/ or taught Theology
Demonstrated competence in multi-faith setting
Knowledge of Mississippi history, regions, politics, culture
Active participation in a faith-based community

Position Details:

Salary: $60,000 Annually

About Us:

Overview:

The Deputy Director of MS Votes is an executive leadership position responsible for managing the overall internal efficacy and flow of the organization. The Deputy Director will oversee the external programs of MS Votes.

The Deputy Director reports directly to the Executive Director and will directly manage the Communications Director, Field Director, and Policy Director.

Primary Responsibilities:

Staff Management:

Directly manage the Communications Director, Field Director, and Policy Director to ensure their individual and departmental goals are met.
Set performance expectations, goals for direct reports, and conduct regular performance evaluations.
Identify and support professional development and training opportunities for staff members.
Foster a supportive and inclusive work environment that values diversity and promotes employee engagement.
Manage through layers to ensure that each staff in each department are aware of current organizational directives and aligned to hit objectives.

Organizational Management:

Develop and implement strategies that will play a key role in strategic planning implementation, to enhance the internal efficiency and effectiveness of MS Votes.
Ensure smooth coordination and collaboration among different departments within the organization.
Foster a positive organizational culture that promotes teamwork, transparency, and accountability.
Work with MS Votes Executive Leadership Team to develop and streamline internal processes, develop and implement annual plans. Utilize a big-picture approach to ensure goals are robust, attainable, and connected.

Strategic Planning:

Collaborate with the Executive Director and other senior leaders to develop and implement the organization's strategic goals and objectives.
Contribute to the development of long-term plans, annual budgets, and fundraising strategies.
Stay informed about emerging trends, best practices, and policy changes in the field of voter engagement and advocacy.
Assist with design and implementation of programming that ensures long term sustainability of student members, volunteers, and donors.

Partnerships:

Identify community partnerships across the state.
Participate in and engage with coalitions when and where appropriate.

Qualifications:

Need to Have:

Proven experience in nonprofit management, with a minimum of 3 years in a senior leadership role, including at least 3 years of managing staff.
Previous experience running voter engagement, advocacy, or political programs.
Excellent leadership and team management skills.
Exceptional organizational and project management abilities, and ideally experience with Asana.
Strong written and verbal communications skills for a wide variety of stakeholders, including but not limited to: staff, board, and partners.
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strategic partnerships.
Ability to manage multiple projects, plan backwards, consult with various stakeholders, anticipate obstacles, run a tight ship, supervise staff, and keep a cool head while doing it.
Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into concise and actionable recommendations.
Know when to answer the question someone meant to ask rather than the one they did.

Nice to Have:

Previous experience organizing in Mississippi or the Deep South
Previous experience developing and working with governing bodies such as Boards of Directors.
Experience with budgeting processes and managing departmental and/or organizational budgets.
Familiarity with organizing and advocacy best practices and tools.
Experience representing an organization with donors, at briefings, and with partners.
